International Development Jobs in Bangladesh: Who's Hiring
Bangladesh is one of Asia's most active development markets, home to major UN, NGO, and bilateral operations. Here's who's hiring and how to break in.
International Development Jobs in Bangladesh: Who's Hiring
Bangladesh is one of the most important international development markets in Asia. A country that has undergone a remarkable poverty reduction transformation over the past thirty years — often cited as a "development success story" — it continues to attract substantial multilateral and bilateral investment in climate adaptation, health, education, water, and livelihoods. Dhaka is home to a large UN presence, scores of international NGOs (including some that originated in Bangladesh), and major bilateral programmes.
Why Bangladesh Is a Key Development Hub
- Scale of aid flows: Bangladesh is among the top recipients of ODA in Asia; the World Bank, ADB, JICA, FCDO, USAID, and EU all maintain significant programmes
- Climate vulnerability: Bangladesh is one of the world's most climate-vulnerable countries; this drives substantial climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction programming
- Rohingya response: the Rohingya crisis (one million refugees in Cox's Bazar) has generated one of the world's largest humanitarian operations — UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF, WHO, and dozens of INGOs are active in the camps
- Home of BRAC: the world's largest NGO (by number of employees) is Bangladeshi; BRAC employs both national and international staff and is a major force in the sector

In-Demand Roles
- Climate adaptation programme management: Bangladesh's NDC and National Adaptation Plan generate significant technical assistance demand
- Rohingya response: protection, WASH, health, nutrition, and shelter — all sectors are represented in Cox's Bazar
- Health systems: USAID and FCDO both fund large health system strengthening programmes
- WASH: Bangladesh has made significant progress on sanitation but challenges remain; WASH engineering and WASH programme roles are consistently available
