Humanitarian Jobs: How to Build a Career in Humanitarian Response

A complete guide to careers in humanitarian response — the roles, the skills that matter most, the best employers, and how to break in from outside the sector.

Humanitarian Jobs: How to Build a Career in Humanitarian Response

Humanitarian response — the delivery of life-saving assistance to people affected by conflict, disaster, and displacement — is one of the most demanding and meaningful career paths in the development sector. The roles are varied, the contexts are extreme, and the personal rewards and costs are both significant. This guide explains what a career in humanitarian response actually looks like and how to build one.

The Humanitarian Sector: Who's Involved

The global humanitarian system involves three main types of actors:

UN Agencies (mandate holders)

  • UNHCR: leads protection and refugee response
  • WFP: food security and logistics
  • UNICEF: child protection, nutrition, WASH, education
  • WHO: health response
  • OCHA: coordination across the entire system

International NGOs (implementing partners)

  • Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF / Doctors Without Borders)
  • International Rescue Committee (IRC)
  • Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)
  • Save the Children
  • Oxfam, CARE, Mercy Corps, ACF, Solidarités International

Bilateral and multilateral donors

  • ECHO (EU humanitarian aid)
  • USAID/BHA (Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance)
  • FCDO (UK)
  • These fund operations but also directly manage some response coordination

Core Roles in Humanitarian Response

Programme and coordination

  • Humanitarian Affairs Officer: coordination, situation analysis, funding appeals (primarily OCHA)
  • Emergency Coordinator: overall response leadership for an INGO country programme
  • Cluster coordinator: leads the inter-agency coordination mechanism for a specific sector (health, WASH, food security, etc.)

Technical specialists

  • WASH engineers and officers
  • Nutrition specialists and managers
  • Health coordinators and medical coordinators (MedCo)
  • Protection officers (general protection, child protection, GBV)
  • Cash and voucher assistance (CVA) specialists

Support functions (essential but often overlooked)

  • Logistics and supply chain: managing the movement of humanitarian goods — arguably the most critical enabling function
  • Finance and grants management: managing donor compliance in complex multi-donor contexts
  • HR and recruitment: rapid hiring during scale-ups is a serious skill
  • Security advisors: mandatory in most conflict contexts

What Employers Actually Value

Beyond qualifications, humanitarian employers consistently prioritise:

  • Prior deployment experience: having worked in an active crisis is almost always a prerequisite for field roles above coordinator level
  • Language: French (West Africa, Sahel, DRC, Haiti), Arabic (Middle East, North Africa), Spanish (Latin America)
  • Adaptability and stress tolerance: assessed through situational questions in interviews but also inferred from your deployment history
  • Technical depth: generalists are less competitive than specialists with a clear primary skill set (logistics, WASH, protection, health)

Entry Points for Those New to the Sector

  • INGO junior roles: camp management assistant, distribution officer, registration officer — often locally recruited but open to international candidates in major operations
  • Volunteer programmes: UN Volunteers, MSF's non-medical roles, NRC's entry pathways
  • Surge rosters: OCHA's Stand-By Partners, Médicos del Mundo, and others maintain rosters for rapid deployment; being on a roster is not guaranteed work but generates placements
  • National staff experience: many international careers begin in national staff roles with major INGOs in one's home country
