Hydrology & Surface Water Expert (Roster - Multiple Locations)
Full Description
Overview of position
About the CTG roster:
- The CTG Talent Roster is a pre-vetted talent pool designed to support rapid deployment when suitable assignments arise with development, humanitarian, government, and institutional partners. Joining the roster is not an immediate job offer. Candidates who successfully complete screening may be contacted for future opportunities that match their expertise, availability, mobility preferences, and commercial expectations.
- Roster membership is typically valid for up to three (3) years and may be renewed based on continued relevance of experience, candidate availability, performance feedback, and programme demand. Rostered candidates may be considered for short-term, long-term, on-site, hybrid, or advisory assignments across multiple regions, including the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and other locations, depending on project needs.
Purpose of the role:
- To provide mid-to-senior technical expertise in hydrology, surface water assessment, water resources analysis, hydrological modelling, hydroinformatics, integrated water resources management (IWRM), water resilience, desalination-linked planning, water reuse, and sustainable water resource management to support evidence-based planning and climate-resilient water systems
Contract Type:
- This vacancy is to create a pre-vetted roster. Based on client/project needs, different contract modalities may be used, including fixed-term, project-based, consultancy, retainer, remote, hybrid or on-site assignments.
Roster Duration:
- Up to 3 years, renewable based on continued relevance, availability, performance feedback, and programme demand
Potential Duty Stations:
- Multiple locations globally, with potential assignments in water-scarce, arid, semi-arid, and climate-affected contexts, including the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and other regions.
Role objectives
Hydrology & Surface Water Analysis:
- Conduct hydrological assessments, watershed studies, river basin analysis, runoff estimation, flood/drought risk analysis, and surface water availability assessments.
- Analyse rainfall, streamflow, catchment, water balance, climate, and hydrometeorological data to support planning and decision-making.
- Support assessment of surface water-groundwater interactions where relevant.
- Contribute to technical studies in arid, semi-arid, water-scarce, or climate-sensitive environments.
Modelling, Data & Technical Systems:
- Develop, review, or support hydrological models using relevant tools and methodologies.
- Work with GIS, remote sensing, hydroinformatics, water databases, monitoring networks, and related digital water information systems, where relevant to the assignment.
- Support technical assessments related to non-conventional water resources, including desalination integration, treated wastewater reuse, water recovery, and climate-resilient water supply approaches where relevant.
- Collaborate with hydrogeologists, GIS specialists, data analysts, engineers, economists, and policy advisors.
IWRM, SDG6 & Advisory Support:
- Provide technical inputs into IWRM frameworks, SDG6-related planning, water allocation, water demand assessment, and sustainable water resources management.
- Translate technical hydrology outputs into clear policy, planning, and management recommendations.
- Support government counterparts and programme teams with technical advice, presentations, and decision-ready analysis.
Reporting & Knowledge:
- Prepare technical reports, maps, data summaries, modelling notes, presentations, and advisory briefs.
- Document assumptions, limitations, risks, and recommendations in a clear and auditable manner.
Project reporting
This role reports to the line manager.
Key competencies
Education:
- University degree in Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Hydroinformatics, Water Resources Management, Geography, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred for senior technical assignments.
Experience:
- 5–20 years of progressively responsible experience in hydrology, surface water analysis, water resources management, hydrological modelling, hydroinformatics, or related technical disciplines..
- Candidates will be assessed and aligned to appropriate assignments based on their level of experience, technical depth, and seniority.
- Experience with surface water modelling, IWRM, SDG6, GIS, hydroinformatics, or water data systems is strongly preferred.
- Experience in arid, semi-arid, drought-prone, water-scarce, or climate-sensitive contexts is an advantage.
Technical Skills:
- Hydrological assessment, watershed analysis, water balance, and surface water modelling.
- Experience with relevant tools such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SWAT, MIKE, WEAP, ArcGIS, QGIS, remote sensing platforms, or comparable systems.
- Ability to analyse and interpret hydrometeorological, climate, spatial, and water resources data.
- Understanding of IWRM, SDG6, climate resilience,
