Community Health Worker
Full Description
**Job Overview:** The Community Health Worker participates in a time limited workforce development and applied learning program designed to support refugee and immigrant community members pursuing careers in community health and human services. Through a combination of structured training, supervised field experience, and community engagement activities, trainees build foundational skills in outreach, health education, healthcare navigation, and community engagement.
Working under close supervision of IRC Health Program staff, the Community Health Worker supports culturally and linguistically responsive outreach and health promotion activities within refugee and immigrant communities. Trainees assist with community education efforts, resource navigation, outreach events, and basic data collection while developing professional skills and exposure to community based health and social service settings.
This position is intended as an entry level transitional opportunity that supports workforce readiness, professional development, and practical skill building. Trainees are not expected to independently manage client caseloads or perform advanced case management functions.
**Major Responsibilities:**
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Community Outreach and Engagement
- Support outreach activities within refugee and immigrant communities through community events, informational sessions, canvassing, outreach calls, flyering, and other engagement activities.
- Assist with promoting awareness of available health, wellness, and community resources.
- Help facilitate culturally and linguistically appropriate communication between community members and IRC Health Program staff.
- Participate in outreach events, workshops, and community education activities as assigned.
Health Education Support
- Assist with delivery of basic health education and wellness information under staff guidance and within approved program materials.
- Support distribution and explanation of educational materials related to preventive care, healthcare access, wellness services, vaccination opportunities, and other identified community health priorities.
- Provide feedback on outreach materials to support cultural relevance and accessibility.
Program Learning and Skill Development
- Participate in structured trainings, professional development activities, coaching, and supervised field learning opportunities.
- Complete assigned learning activities, reflections, and workforce readiness components connected to the training program.
- Build foundational skills related to communication, professionalism, documentation, community engagement, and teamwork.
- Demonstrate willingness to learn and apply feedback in a professional setting.
Documentation and Administrative Support
- Accurately document outreach activities, event participation, and assigned program data in accordance with training and program guidelines.
- Support collection of community feedback and outreach information to help inform program activities.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all IRC policies and procedures regarding privacy and sensitive information.
Other
- Collaborate with IRC staff, community partners, interns, and volunteers in support of program activities.
- Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to all IRC policies, including the IRC Way and Child Safeguarding policies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned within the scope of the training program and position responsibilities.
**Job Requirements:**
**Education:** High school diploma preferred. Interest in public health, community engagement, social services, or related fields strongly preferred.
**Work Experience:** Previous volunteer, community, lived experience, or professional experience working with refugee, immigrant, or culturally diverse communities preferred.
**Other:** In accordance with Arizona State Law, must possess or be eligible to receive a fingerprint clearance card.
**Demonstrated Skills and Proficiencies:**
- Interest in community health, outreach, or social services work.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work respectfully and effectively in a multicultural environment.
- Ability to learn new skills and apply feedback.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and web based systems preferred.
- Multilingual skills strongly preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Must have reliable transportation consistent with program needs.
**Working Environment:**
- A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
- Occasional domestic (non-local) travel required; up to 10%.
