Full Description

The NIH BEITA Center for Research and Education in Multiscale Bioengineering, Bioimaging, and Biosensing (REMB3 Center) at Delaware State University (DSU) is established to bring together a multidisciplinary team of engineers, physical scientists, and life-scientists who will integrate and drive research, technology innovation, and educational training in bioengineering and biomedical applications. Over the UG3 and UH3 phases of this project the Center will create a synergistic and integrative environment for promoting and expanding bioengineering and biomedical engineering programs at DSU. The Center’s focus will be: 1) to create a comprehensive integrated bioengineering program with the emerging strength in data-science and modern biomedical technologies; 2) to establish articulation agreements with the University of Delaware and Rowan University to open pipelines to DSU students to enroll in BS+MS degrees in biomedical engineering; 3) to strengthen the institutional capacity for sustaining research activities in bioimaging, biosensing, and data-driven methodologies; 4) to foster a nurturing training and educational environment for training a talented workforce in bioengineering and biomedical engineering careers; 5) to develop a hub for promoting bio-entrepreneurship and networking with biomedical professionals.
The REMB3 Center will facilitate and provide support for establishing curricular programs and research infrastructure in bioengineering and biomedical research to be accessible to students and researchers; supporting early-stage investigators who are pursuing research at the interface between optical science, engineering, data science, and life-science; mentoring these investigators to achieve grant success and scientific maturity and to become independent externally-funded researchers; and recruiting and training talented students majoring in STEM fields who will participate in the REMB3 summer internship program or complete successfully their degrees. The Center will be a hub for a dynamic research community and bio-entrepreneurs statewide and nationwide, who are interested in biomedical applications in the areas of imaging, sensing, and data science.

More importantly, the REMB3 Center will provide opportunities for scientific growth at DSU to train the Nation's full range of talent in meeting the growing demand to accelerate the development and implementation of high-impact biomedical innovation and technologies. The success of the center will be measured by how well the established research capacity and the interdepartmental and multi-institutional educational programs increase and improve the training of the talented students who are entering the workforce. This will include: the number of recruited and trained researchers and students, the number of grant awards, the enrollment, retention, and graduation of the educational programs, the number and quality of developed medical technologies, the short- and long-term sustainability mechanisms, and the success of the trainees in entering bioengineering and biomedical engineering careers.
