American Society of Biomechanics Annual Meeting 2025

The American Society of Biomechanics (ASB) is a leader in promoting biomechanics research, engagement, and dissemination in the United States. The Annual Meeting to be held in Pittsburgh, PA in August of 2025 will bring together interdisciplinary researchers across a wide range of biomechanics research that spans basic and translational topics. The research portfolio of ASB’s membership is highly interdisciplinary and complements the missions of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Center. Extensive programming is planned around aging, especially as it relates to mobility and locomotion, in addition to other topics relevant for an aging community (e.g., arthritis, balance, fall prevention). The society aims to foster dissemination of previously developed research and ideation of future research that enhances health, independence, quality of life, and productivity for people across a wide spectrum of age, clinical conditions, injuries, and disability conditions.
The 2025 Annual Meeting will be held at the David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA during August of 2025. The meeting will feature keynote lectures, award lectures, podium presentations, thematic poster sessions, invited symposia, poster presentations, and topical tutorials. Furthermore, the event will promote engagement through laboratory tours and programming focused on mentoring. The society emphasizes student participation and mentoring. We anticipate meeting attendance to exceed 900 delegates, with approximately half to be students. Through our programming and funding, we will encourage broad participation across students and faculty across career stages and across the United States and Canada.
The proposed R13 will enhance the society’s ability to administer its travel awards for early career researchers who face financial barriers to participating and Faculty Scholars Award programs. Furthermore, a new mechanism will be created to support aspiring biomechanists. Beyond the technical development of the conference, the meeting includes a wide range of programming to support professional development and workforce development including groups that provide community and networking opportunities for different sub-fields of biomechanics, or different career stages. Lastly, a STEM Educational Outreach Program that will provide experiential learning about biomechanics and scientific conferences for high school students who live in the Pittsburgh community.
This application proposed to fund the travel awards for 17 early-career scientists, Faculty Scholars Awards for eight members, the new First Steps in Biomechanics Award for 13 participants, and costs for a STEM Educational Outreach Program for 10 individuals. NIH-R13-supported programs were offered at the last seven (2015-2024) in-person annual meetings.
