My proposed research would examine the development of earth sciences during the late Ottoman Empire and
early Turkish Republic, 1900-1945. Alongside the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic's
founding in 1923, this period saw geology emerge as an independent discipline and the production of Turkey's
